Top Tips For SEO Success In 2013

SEO search engine optimizationLike most SEO consultants, I’m frequently asked for advice on how to get a site ranked quickly for extremely competitive search terms. When I explain that SEO is a process that takes time, particularly if you’re looking to produce sustainable results, people tend to think that I’m withholding some magical information.

Google’s algorithm changes have increasingly demonstrated that sites that take a long-term approach will tend to get better results. This doesn’t, however, stop many people from getting drawn in by the idea of shortcuts and quick fixes.

If you’ve studied SEO in any detail, then you’ll understand that automated processes and fads are more likely to lead to penalties than to any suggestion of success. Why is it that small business owners, in particular, are drawn to make use of such approaches?

I think that this can be explained by a combination of pricing and lack of knowledge. If you don’t know what SEO is all about, then it must seem incredibly tempting to imagine that impressive results can be obtained without spending very much money. You may well reason that there’s not an enormous amount for you to lose.

Unfortunately, this ignores the reality of the situation. Poor SEO techniques can lead to damage being done that may take months to recover from. Fortunately, there are still some proven techniques that continue to produce results. Here are some top tips for boosting your online business right now:

Add a blog and write regularly

The search engines all love to see the addition of quality content at regular intervals. This doesn’t have to be done by making use of a blog, but I do think that blogs make it that bit easier to post regularly.

You probably know your business better than anyone else, so it makes sense that you should be the one who does the writing. As a minimum, you should be looking to add a new post or two each week. Focus on topics that are closely related to your business and seek to provide a real insight. It’s better to produce occasional posts that are informative, rather than churning out hundreds of poor quality articles.

Make intelligent use of social media

You shouldn’t have Facebook and Twitter accounts simply because you believe that you are following a trend. Instead, think about how social media accounts can be used to really boost your online presence.

Actively reach out to those who have influence within your industry and ensure that they are aware of the latest developments. Don’t make the mistake, however, of simply adding to the general noise on social networks.

Give freebies

Handing out free samples, or small gifts, can work wonders. You’ll find that recipients will often be prepared to Tweet about your generosity, or even to provide your website with a link. That’s ignoring the fact that they’ll probably also mention the gift to friends, work colleagues and family members.

Many people believe that link building must involve actively asking for links. This is a great tactic, however, for gaining links, without needing to even ask for them.

Become an authority

You know your industry and you have a lot to offer as a result. Go out of your way to make sure that others realise that you have an enormous amount of expertise. From guest blog slots to forum entries, you have the opportunity to ensure that others know all about you.

In my own case, I often talk about digital marketing in Winchester, or other topics that I know well. By doing so, I draw attention to my own knowledge and expertise.

Take the chance to demonstrate that you are someone who should be listened to. By building up your reputation in this way, you’ll gain links and visitors to your website.
